Second Graders Get Crushed!

Second graders explored the concept of pressure today in preparation for our dive into the ocean zones.

For our first experiment, students rolled balls of play dough. They stacked three books on top of the first ball, the stacked another ball and another three books. They repeated the process for the third ball. Students then looked at the three *no longer* balls to compare their shapes and theorize about why they looked different.

Another experiment we conducted used gravity (water pressure) to push water out of holes punched in a bottle. Students predicted which hole (top, middle, or bottom) would squirt the farthest.

After our experiments, we discussed the ocean zones and how pressure changes the deeper into the ocean you go. Students recorded questions, and we used them to form research groups. We had some fun learning experiences today!
