How Germs Travel

5th grade TAG students have been involved this week in learning more about how germs travel and the threat of epidemics and pandemics. Students are growing cultures in petri dishes over the next few weeks to find the "germiest" place in the school.

Students prepare to collect cultures from different areas of the building!

Students can't wait to see in a few weeks if Ms. Garosi's cell phone is the "germiest" object in the building!

To show how easily it is to get germs from all parts of the school without ever leaving the classroom,  students took part in a handshaking activity. In groups of 5, students had to figure out the fewest number of handshakes needed for all 5 students to get all 5 colors of germs on their hands. They began by putting on lotion and one color of glitter. Students could not shake hands more than once. Great hands on learning!

In this two-player game, students simulate how viruses travel the world. Students use strategy to plan moves as  they take on the roles of a medic and a virus. The role of the medic is to eradicate viruses in a given region thus establishing a vaccinated (or immune) region. The role of the virus is to infect all non-vaccinated cities.
