Fourth Graders - DEBATE!

Fourth graders studied the components of debate and used persuasive writing skills to prepare a defense!

Using The Lorax as our anchor text, we discussed the conflict between preserving the environment and economical pursuits.  We compared the Lorax and the Oncler's conflict to the conflict between the Native Americans and the European Settlers in regards to their use of natural resources. We also made connections to modern-day dilemmas.

Students chose which perspective, the Lorax or the Oncler, they wanted to defend. Next, they brainstormed topics for arguments and rebuttals individually, and they and narrowed down the ideas as a group. Students were then given roles, and each student developed either an opening, closing, argument, rebuttal, or visual advertisement for his/her team. Teams worked together to offer suggestions for improvement, encourage expression, and smooth out transitions. Last, students presented their speeches! The end result was a lot of fun and some very impressive debating!
