4th Grade Students Get Ready to Fly!
Students researched various flying machines and analyzed how the structure of the machines' parts affect their purposes.
Students used their research to determine the function of three different paper airplane models.
To test their knowledge, they had to pick which of the three models could most accurately hit a target from 10 feet away.
We had lots of fun testing out our theories!
We stretched our knowledge even further...
Mrs. Rolader gave us a picture of a plane that was poorly designed, and we had to use our research and creative problem solving skills to rebuild it.
We used a method called SCAMPER:
Substitute
Combine
Adapt
Modify
Put to Other Uses
Eliminate
Rearrange
We came up with some really great ideas while proving that we really know how to make an airplane fly!
Mrs. Rolader also had us create PowerPoint presentations to practice our communication skills. When we were finished, we presented them to our classmates.
Of course, keeping track of all these projects is complicated work! In TAG we also learn time-management and organization skills.
4th Grade Students Get Special Visitors!
Our Tuesday class was able to meet Joseph's dad, Mr. Canitano, who works for Delta. He shared some insightful engineering facts and showed us some pretty neat video clips. He made us all feel a little safer about flying!
Our Wednesday class met another parent: Mrs. Rolader's dad! The kids found it really interesting that Mr. Schmitt has had his pilot's license since before he had his driver's license! He taught us all about ground control and how pilots navigate the runways before takeoff. We even participated in a ground control simulation.
Mr. Schmitt also taught us the phonetic alphabet that pilots use to communicate. We practiced by spelling our names.
